Welcome to Manderley Press!
Thank you for popping in to see what we’re all about.
My name is Rebeka and as you can probably tell, I am a fan of vintage books, old houses, talented authors, beautiful bookshops, dusty libraries, bright flowers, fabulous prints and awe-inspiring art and design.
For many years I have worked in bookshops, publishing houses and museums, learning about what makes a publication both beautiful and interesting. The outside of a book should be as alluring as its interior, and that is why I have set up Manderley Press — to give new covers and new introductions (by the very best writers and artists) to titles that have been forgotten about … and then reintroduce them to a brand new audience.
My favourite holidays are spent roaming around old houses and museums (hopefully the kids will forgive me one day), preferably with a few hours in an indie bookshop and a local coffee spot; I have always found that bricks and mortar can transport me immediately to another time and place — combine that with an actual book, and caffeine, and I am in heaven.
I grew up in Whitby, North Yorkshire — muse to many wonderful authors new and old (think Bram Stoker, Elizabeth Gaskell, Storm Jameson and Kate Atkinson), and I hope that some of the passion that inspired them while visiting or living in the town has rubbed off on me. Nowadays I am lucky enough to live in the London house of Victorian author William Hale White. I am thrilled every time I pass the place where his desk was once placed, and where he wrote his first few books. I like to think that something of the house itself seeped into his writing.
It goes without saying that each one of the books on the Manderley Press list is a favourite of mine. Some of them have been on my shelves since I was a child; others I have discovered along the way, finding out about the history of characterful houses, places and people I’ve visited over the years.
My two amazing daughters are faithful literary scouts and while one of them definitely prefers the Beano to a book, both can be relied upon to test out some of my more random discoveries and decide whether they are fit for purpose for the modern younger reader. My husband occasionally adds to our ever-growing stacks of books (they make for excellent insulation); together, we are Manderley Press.
